At least four out of seven Pretoria companies were slapped with nine
Occupational Health and Safety contravention notices following a week long
inspection blitz by the Department of Labour inspectors.
The inspections were carried out in Randfontein, Rosslyn, Pretoria West,
Garankuwa, Brandvlei, and in Centurion over the last seven days.
The contravention notices were issued based on the following violations:
* no copies of Occupational Health and Safety Act
* no Occupational Health and Safety representatives
* no certificate of compliance for the electrical certificate
* no assessment of Noise Induced Hearing Loss Regulation
* no records were kept on premises for vessels under pressure in use
* manufacturer's data plate in the pressure vessel had no particulars
* no freezer suits or gloves provided
* housekeeping was poor passage ways had materials that made it difficult for
the movement of the forklift.
Companies in which compliance was particularly worrying include Quantum Leap
Investments in Rosslyn, All Joy Limited-SA in Brandvlei, R K Meat Productions
in Centurion and Jolly Jumbo (PTY) Ltd in Centurion.
Denny in Randfontein, SAB-Garankuwa, Dairyworld (PTY) Ltd in Pretoria West
were found to be fully compliant with the regulation requirements.
Meanwhile the Dept of Labour incorrectly reported that Mr Sweets in
Johannesburg was issued with a prohibition notice for violating the regulations
of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, ordering the company to close shop.
In fact, Mr Sweets was found to be fully compliant with the Act.
