Labour inspections to focus on Limpopo domestics

8 August 2007

The domestic sector in Limpopo will come under the spotlight next week, with
Labour inspectors embarking on an ambitious advocacy and inspection campaign to
determine the level of law compliance.

The week-long advocacy and inspection campaign, scheduled for Monday to
Friday (13 to 17 August 2007) forms part of the Department's drive to protect
vulnerable workers.

The objectives of this round of inspection and advocacy campaign are to
ensure that domestic employers and workers alike understand their reciprocal
rights and obligations aimed at engendering the culture of self compliance.

During the campaign, the inspectors will be scrutinising employment records
in respect of wages, hours of work, leave, deductions, accommodation and verify
compliance with the provisions of the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF).

In terms of the law, domestic employers are expected to pay their workers a
monthly minimum salary of R1 066,83 (Area A) and R865-54 (Area B).

"It is incumbent on all employers to deduct one percent of the worker's
salary and contribute an equal rate to the Unemployment Insurance Fund," Labour
spokesperson Zolisa Sigabi said.
