The Department of Labour is inviting all employers and workers in the
province of KwaZulu-Natal to come and learn more about their Unemployment
Insurance Fundâs rights and obligations, as well as information on the latest
increase on the maximum earning levels of the UIF to attend a free community
outreach event to be held in Kwa Mashu over this weekend.
The event, which forms part of the overall strategy of Public Awareness and
Education Campaign of the UIF, provides a comprehensive range of programmes and
services designed to educate, inform and to support the UIF clientele. This
stems from the fact that the majority of the people sometimes miss out on
benefits due to them because of a lack of awareness around the services and
offerings of the UIF.
Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana Spokesperson, Mokgadi Pela said while
the full day community outreach event was basically aimed at building an
understanding around the rights and obligations of both workers and employers,
it also took the form of infotainment to keep the crowds always on their
feet.
He said the UIF handled thousands of appeals every month from people who
submitted their claims for benefits either after the stipulated time period or
having resigned from work, which was against the law. The purpose of the
campaign was to educate the public on the doâs and donâts of the UIF.
âRecent events such as the elderly people from the Eastern Cape, who camped
in Tshwane for two weeks to demand among other things âUIF moniesâ, confirm the
urgent need to intensify public awareness and education campaign around UIF
issues.â
The Department would therefore like to encourage members of the public to
attend and learn more on how to access the UIF.
The increase in the UIF ceiling from R10 966 to R11 662, which comes into
effect at the beginning of next month, would also be explained in detail.
