Thohoyandou Magistrate's Court has slapped a leading fabric manufacturing
company with a fine for refusing to comply with the lawful order of a labour
inspector during an inspection.
Imran Patel of Sarah Fabric in Thohoyandou was yesterday (Monday) sentenced
to three months imprisonment with an option of a R1 500 fine by the Thohoyandou
Magistrate's Court for contravening sections 92(e) of the Basic Conditions of
Employment Act.
The case was postponed since 2005 due to the unavailability of a competent
interpreter of Gujerati language.
Labour inspectors in Limpopo are investigating allegations that the employer
is underpaying two of his workers contravening the provisions of the sectoral
determination for the wholesale and retail sector.
If the allegations are proved to be true, the employer is likely to pay his
workers an amount of R23 970,96 in arrears for outstanding wages.
