Labour on employment equity workshop on online reporting

Scores of business people converged for the employment equity
(EE) workshop

Scores of business people converged on East London today, Wednesday, for a
workshop encouraging large employers to submit their Employment Equity Report
online from 1 September.

They included those who left their homes in several parts of the Eastern
Cape as early as 03h00.

Addressing about hundred employers, Tshililo Muthato, Assistant Manager in
the EE registry said, "We urge you to take advantage of the online reporting
period which starts from 1 September to October 1. This period allows you
enough time to complete your reports and correct them before submitting them to
us."

"Please avoid the last minute rush that so often typifies South
Africans."

He said the Department of Labour staff in the Eastern Cape provincial office
would receive training for the rest of this week on how to help employers
capture the information online.

The road shows have already been conducted in Limpopo, North West,
Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal with more to follow in the Western Cape, Gauteng
south and north.

Muthato said employers were required to prepare equity plans, consult
employees or representative trade unions and submit their reports to the
employment equity directorate.

He said it was important that all reports should be signed by either the
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) or Managing Director of the firm.

"This is to ensure accountability," he said.

Muthato said employment equity should be a process, rather than a once-off
event.

The workshop took place against the backdrop of fresh comments by Commission
for Employment Equity Chairperson, Jimmy Manyi, that employment equity was
moving at a "snail's pace".
