Labour employees to undertake skills training in Cuba

23 May 2007

A delegation of Labour Department employees from around the country will
next Wednesday, 30 May jet out on a two-week skills empowerment programme to
Cuba. The 10 Employment Services Practitioners (ESPs) will be accompanied by 10
managers and the Mpumalanga Provincial Executive Manager. The study visit forms
part of a standing bilateral agreement between the two countries and is set to
help expose the South African delegation to identified Cuban community
development and employment programmes from which they will learn. These range
from rehabilitation of prisoners and ex-convicts, to training youth, women and
people with disabilities.

They will also get to see how, among others, agriculture, apprenticeship and
internship programmes are conducted. This will be a second batch of ESPs
visiting the Caribbean Island, following an earlier successful study visit by
another group between August 27 and September 15 2005. The latest study tour
follows a visit to South Africa by Cuban government officials who spent two
weeks in September last year evaluating the implementation of skills obtained
by the first group. It was during this visit that a decision was taken to send
a second group as a way of complementing the gained expertise.
