Domestic employers reprimanded

16 August 2007

Labour inspectors in Limpopo turned the heat on domestic employers netting
several of them for failing to issue their employees with written particulars
of their employment contract.

Preliminary blitz inspection results reveal that out of a total of 249
employers inspected, 117 were found guilty of contravening the law that
provides that an employer must issue a domestic worker with a signed
contract.

However, 167 domestic employers were found to be fully complying with the
payment of minimum wage rate stipulated for applicable municipal area and
according to the number of hours worked.

In terms of the law, domestic employers are expected to pay their workers a
monthly minimum wage of R1066,83 (Area A), and R865,54 (Area B).

Employers who are found to be contravening sections of the law have been
reprimanded with 62 of them slapped with an undertaking.

"We have given the employers time to comply, however those who are guilty of
contravening the minimum wage provision will be made to pay up
retrospectively," Labour Spokesperson Zolisa Sigabi said.
