Commission on Gender Equality on N Mashabane

Reaction to (re)appointment of Norman Mashabane

14 March 2007

The Commission on Gender Equality (CGE) views the new developments in the
ongoing matter of Norman Mashabane as a case of 'justice delayed is justice
denied', from the perspective of both parties concerned.

While the alleged perpetrator still considers himself not guilty and his
case currently on appeal, the complainant justifiably may perceive Mashabane's
re-appointment as condonement of his alleged actions and prolongment of her
psychological trauma.

The CGE continues to monitor the matter pertaining to allegations of sexual
harassment against Mashabane, and we call upon the Department of Justice, and
all role players, to deal with this matter speedily in order to bring this
matter to closure.

Similarly, we want to see government protecting the interest of victims of
all types of abuse, particularly women and children.

The CGE continues to unequivocally condemn any form of action that violates
the rights and dignity of women. We also reiterate our position that the
association of public figures with alleged sexual harassment, as highly
publicised, is disturbing because it does not send a good message should these
be proven to be true. The continuous violation of women and children is denting
the image of our young democratic state.
