in South Africa
13 October 2006
The aim of this workshop is to review the draft policy on Game (Wildlife)
Farming by the Department of Agriculture, following its publication for public
comments by the Minister of Agriculture and Land Affairs in July 2006. The
workshop will be held on 30 November 2006. Participants will include
stakeholders from agriculture, environmentalists, academics, researchers and
non-governmental organisations (NGOs). This workshop will be held at the South
African National Biodiversity Institute, 2 Cussonia Avenue, Brummeria,
Pretoria, starting at 09h00.
The main objective of the policy is to cover all the current incongruencies
and inconsistencies hampering the development of a viable game (wildlife)
farming sector through a multi-disciplinary framework. This framework will then
be endorsed by Cabinet and all affected departments for implementation at all
levels of governance, resulting in one Game (Wildlife) Farming policy for South
Africa.
The newly-drafted policy among others sets a framework to:
* support the effective management of viable game (wildlife) farming
systems
* ensure the sustainable management of natural resources
* facilitate the development of norms and standards for sustainable game
(wildlife) farming
* promote and support equitable access to and participation in the sector
* provide a framework for effective animal health management
* establish a national game (wildlife) farm and animal database
* facilitate promotion and marketing
* deal with relevant food safety issues
* promote research training and support services.
