National Workshop on the Draft Range and Forage Policy in South
Africa

6 November 2006

The workshop to review the Draft Policy on Game Farming by the Department of
Agriculture, following its publication for public comments by the Minister of
Agriculture and Land Affairs in July 2006, will be held on 4 December 2006.
Participation will include stakeholders from agriculture, environmentalists,
academics, researchers and non-governmental organisation (NGOs). This workshop
will be held at the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), 2
Cussonia Avenue, Brummeria, Pretoria, starting at 09h00.

The objectives of the policy are to:

* provide a framework to promote and facilitate the sustainable use of South
Africa's range and forage resources for animal production
* assist with poverty alleviation through the efficient utilisation of range
and forage resources for animal production
* support the revival of existing structures to facilitate Research &
Development within biomes and across provincial boundaries
* provide a framework for effective range and forage monitoring and evaluation
with the potential to support legislation to act against those who do not
comply with the relevant regulations regarding the sustainable use of this
resource
* provide motivation for more specific legislation on range and forage and an
effective and consistent regulation.
