Word Environment Day 2014 logo

The United Nations designated 5 June as World Environment Day to deepen public awareness of the need to preserve and enhance the environment. That date recalls the opening day of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment (Stockholm, 1972), which led to the establishment of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

South Africa will celebrate this year’s WED under the slogan "Raise your voices, not the sea levels". The theme: “International Year of Small Islands Developing States (SIDS)”
