Notes to editor:

About UNITE: The UNITE Campaign is an initiative of Sport & Recreation South Africa and the Department of Arts and Culture to promote social cohesion and nation building utilising the power of sport and arts as a tool for nation building and social mobilisation. This overarching campaign cuts across a number of other programs which the two departments deliver.

The anchor programme of this campaign is the Nelson Mandela Sports and Culture Day.

The Nelson Mandela Sport and Culture Day was first held on the 17 August 2013 in the form of double-header matches where 52000 spectators saw Bafana Legends take on the Italian Legends, the mighty Springboks defeating Argentina, whilst Bafana Bafana saw off Burkina Faso all in one day, at one venue, the FNB Stadium.

The festivities ended with a music concert featuring the legendary Salif Keita.

This program is firmly anchored on the fundamentals that unite us all as South Africans, i.esocial cohesion, nation building, patriotism and promoting world peace. These are after all, the same ideals to which our former President, Tata Nelson Mandela dedicated his life, and one of the many legacies he left!

The 2014 program will include Athletics (road running and walking); and Cycling - the two sporting codes which have amongst the largest number of professional and recreational participants.

The sporting events will be followed by musical entertainment hosted at Union Building lawns. The Department of Sport and Recreation in partnership with the Department of Arts and Culture calls on all South Africans to come together and participate in this momentous occasion.
