MEC Faith Mazibuko lays wreaths at Vuka Cemetery in Boipatong, 17 Jun

Youth to benefit as Boipatong massacre commemorates 24th anniversary

Youth from Boipatong and surrounding areas will be the first beneficiaries of the newly built R34million state of the art Memorial and Youth Centre to be opened this coming Friday, 17 June during the 24th anniversary commemoration of Boipatong massacre.

The 3 part programme will be led by provincial MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Faith Mazibuko and Sedibeng MMC for Sports, Recreation, Arts & Culture, Cllr. Yusuf Mahommed starting at 7am with laying of wreaths at the Vuka Cemetery where many of the victims are buried.

The second part will take place at the new Boipatong Memorial and Youth Centre with a candle light ceremony for the victims and ribbon cutting to declare the first phase -offering youth services- operational.

The day’s programme will end with a symbolic walk led by both the MEC and MMC from the Memorial to the local stadium wherein sports and cultural activities will commence including a legends soccer match, netball, theatre and cultural performances.

The commemoration of Boipatong massacre is organised in remembrance and honour of 39 people who were brutally killed 24 years ago in 1992 on the eve of South Africa’s democracy. It has been described by many as one of the bloodiest and brutal events of state sponsored violence at the time.
