World Food Day commemoration

"Climate change is real and things must change", advised the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Senzeni Zokwana. He was speaking in relation to the World Food Day commemoration under the theme, "Climate is changing. Food and agriculture must too”.

United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) representative, Dr Lewis Hove echoed the same sentiments that climate change is a threat to food security and prevents farmers from producing sufficient food.

The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF), together with the Department of Social Development, KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, uMlalazi Local Municipality and FAO commemorated World Food Day on14 October 2016 at Nkume Sports Field in uMlalazi Local Municipality in Eshowe, KwaZulu-Natal. World Food Day is commemorated annually around the world on 16 October, in honour of the founding date of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization.

Deputy Minister, General Cele said that it is sad that the number of hungry people in the world is decreasing, but is increasing in our country. He further added that DAFF and its partners must work hard to reduce hunger, and minimise the number of people going to bed hungry.

The Minister, Senzeni Zokwana, the Deputy Minister, General Bheki Cele, KwaZulu-Natal MEC of Agriculture and Rural Development, Themba Mthembu and the Mayor of uMlalazi Local Municipality, Thelumoya Zulu visited Siphamandla Vegetable Cooperative and donated seedlings, garden tools and water tanks. They also visited three indigent households and donated food parcels.
