MEC Albert Fritz conducts oversight inspections at various social grant payment points

Western Cape MEC to conduct oversight visits to SASSA payment points

The Western Cape MEC of Social Development, Albert Fritz, will conduct oversight inspections at various social grant payment points across the province.

The MEC will be joined by Provincial Department of Social Development (DSD) officials across the province to monitor progress at paypoints.

Payment of social grants is the responsibility of the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA). SASSA is a national entity reporting directly to the National Minister of Social Development, Bathabile Dlamini.

In the wake of the scathing Constitutional Court directive to Minister Dlamini and SASSA, which ordered that Cash Paymaster Services continue payments, the MEC will play his oversight role and monitor the payments process on the April 3rd.

Prior to the ConCourt resolving the crisis, MEC Fritz had raised concerns at a MINMEC meeting held earlier in the month, regarding the chaotic handling of the looming social grants payments deadline by the SASSA.

It is completely unacceptable that SASSA and Minister Dlamini had kept provincial departments in the dark about this matter until the very last minute, especially as we have no operational control over SASSA.

MEC Fritz remains committed to monitoring SASSA's conduct. The 1.5 million social grant recipients in the province must not be taken for a ride.
