Update on emergency intervention to increase water supply to Cape Town
The Western Cape Government will conduct a site visit to the Leeu River Diversion Weir which diverts water to the Voelvlei Dam, where emergency maintenance work will be done to increase water supply to the Cape Town water supply system.
Alan Winde, Minister of Economic Opportunities, and Ivan Meyer, Minister of Finance, will visit the weir on Thursday, 10 August 2017, and provide an update on the progress of the emergency intervention.
Although the maintenance of the infrastructure is the responsibility of the National Department of Water and Sanitation, the Western Cape Government has committed funding to remove sand from the weir, which is set to significantly increase the water supply of the Voelvlei Dam.
A total of 7.5 million cubic metres of water are estimated to have been lost in 2016 due to the national government’s irregular maintenance of the system.
All media are invited.
