The Department of Water and Sanitation in conjunction with the Blouberg Municipality will host Women and Drought Information Session to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Women’s March to Union Buildings in 1956.
Under theme “Women United in Moving South Africa Forward”, the department developed activities around challenges it faces in the execution of its mandate. The challenges ranges from water leaks and illegal connection, health and hygiene issues, water quality issues, issues around sinking of boreholes and drought.
Women are targeted because the impact of drought on people’s lives is not the same for men and women. Women bear the brunt of providing water for families, which requires more time and long walks to fetch water, making them exposed to chances of being raped and assaulted.
The objectives of the session are to create awareness through presentations on how serious the problem of drought is on the lives of people, especially women to motivate women to play an active role in the management of water resources, to encourage women to initiate projects, to educate women on health and hygiene issues and to educate women on water quality issues.
