Water and Sanitation celebrates Global Handwashing Day

Global Handwashing Day to be celebrated

The Department of Water and Sanitation in partnership with the Department of Health and UNICEF will today celebrate the Global Handwashing Day under the theme “Raise a hand for hygiene”. The world at large celebrates and marks the annual Global Handwashing Day (GHWD) every year on the 15 October as part of its efforts to encourage people to wash hands with soap in order to reduce childhood mortality rates and other related diseases.

Thus the purpose of the Global Handwashing Day is to mobilise communities, households, schools and workplaces to wash hands with soaps to curb the spread of communicable diseases such as diarrhoea.

This campaign is dedicated to raising awareness about the criticality of washing hands with soap especially after using the toilet, playing with animals, before eating or handling food, before feeding babies, after sneezing and as one the cheapest ways to stay healthier. It is about prevention as being better than cure.

The main event to celebrate the Global Handwashing Day in the country will take place at Reimoletswe Primary School in Winterveldt, City of Tshwane from 09h00.  The Minister of Water and Sanitation, Minister of Health and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) senior representative are expected to attend the event.

Media is invited to the event.
