Police on viral video footage of SAPS members watching assault on taxi driver

Viral video footage of SAPS members idly watching an assault take place is condemned

A video recording which has recently gone viral, depicting members of the South African Police Service apparently standing by and watching a man being assaulted at a prominent Gauteng mall, is currently under investigation.

These members appeared on a video standing by idly and watching what appeared to be a taxi driver being assaulted by a group of other taxi drivers. If it is found that the members indeed failed to act as required in terms of the South African Police Service Act, our Constitution and the SAPS regulations, decisive action will be taken.

Immediately after this matter was brought to our attention, an investigation was instituted and at least one member on the video, which was not very clear, was identified through other means. This member could well face disciplinary action and depending on the outcome of the investigation, criminal charges could ensue. Efforts are also being made to establish if other members, not visible on the video footage, were at the scene.

This conduct, which has been broadcast on leading television stations and on social media, is completely in contrast with the SAPS Code of Conduct and is condemned.

With regards to the conflict between taxi operators, our members have been given strict instructions to maintain high visibility in identified areas and to bring those perpetrating crimes to book.

The South African Police Service remains committed to ensuring that people are and feel safe.
