Municipality starts process to get new name

The Department of Local Government and Human Settlements in Bokone Bophirima applauds the leadership of Tlokwe/Ventersdorp NW405 Municipality in embarking on the public participation process to solicit inputs from the public on the new permanent name for the municipality.

The two municipalities were amalgamated after heightened public participation process facilitated by Municipal Demarcation Board( MDB), following the 2016 local government elections.

The Municipal Demarcation Board is a constitutional institution whose responsibilities and powers are governed by the country’s Constitution, Section 155 (3) (b) and the Local Government Municipal Demarcation Act of 1998.

This body remains responsible and accountable for the determination and re-determination of municipal boundaries, the delimitation of wards as well as capacity assessment of municipalities.

The public participation for the new permanent name process was started on Tuesday and is intended to cover both community of  erstwhile Tlokwe and Venterdorp municipalities. Thus far the turnout has been  good which reflect different racial groups.

The programme is expected to take a period of two months  and is aimed to ensure that members of the community get involved and own up to the process.

The MEC for Local Government and Human Settlements in Bokone Bophirima, Galaletsang Gaolaolwe said that  the "department has a responsibility within the context of section 154 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa to  support the  municipality to run a smooth process of public engagement and succeed.

The new name of the municipality must ultimately be a community product  that everybody can be proud of"

The MEC further makes a clarion call to all affected communities and stakeholders to sustain good attendance and participate meaningfully  in this transparent process of the new name of the municipality.
