Transport Deputy Minister launches United Nations Fourth Global Road Safety Week
The Fourth United Nations Global Road Safety Week will take place from 8 to14 May 2017.
The UN Global Road Safety Week is an initiative of the UN’s health agency, the World Health Organisation (WHO). One of the aims of this initiative is to improve the global road safety record by preventing road crashes.
The Week will focus on reducing speed limits and exploring measures that can be used to address this key risk factor.
Speed continues to be one of the leading causes of road crashes.
The 4th UN Global Road Safety Week seeks to increase an understanding of the dangers of speed and generate action on measures to address speed management.
The global road safety week will be launched by the Deputy Minister of Transport, Ms. Sindisiwe Chikunga, at Acacia Primary School in Verulam, Durban in KwaZulu-Natal on Monday, 8 May 2017.
Ms. Chikunga will be joined by the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) and Provincial Department of Transport.
During the launch, the RTMC and the Provincial Department of Transport will showcase their road safety flagship programmes that are aimed at compelling motorists to drive at a reasonable speed.
The launch will highlight speed calming measures, scholar patrol with learners and adults being exposed to road safety messaging on speed. The launch will also espouse the “reduce speed” theme with learners demonstrating messages on posters along the roadside.
Speed enforcement activities and an in-loco inspection of speed calming measures will also be part of the day’s ceremony.
