Minister Malusi Gigaba interacts with young people in Maponya Mall, 12 Jun

Special youth month smart ID card applications for 16 year-olds

The Home Affairs Smart ID card Dedicated Office in Maponya Mall will open on Sunday, 12 June 2016, to facilitate applications by 100 identified 16-year-olds from selected schools around Soweto.

Minister Malusi Gigaba will interact with these young people as part of activities for the Youth Month celebrations. This year's Youth Month commemorates the 40th Anniversary of the Soweto Uprisings, remembering the heroics of the Class of '76 who gallantly rose against an evil apartheid system in pursuit of a just educational system.

In this regard, the application for Smart ID cards by these identified learners -aptly coined #DHAsweet16- will contribute towards government's objective of empowering young people to keep the legacy of the Class of 76 alive by taking advantage of available opportunities to build South Africa and change their lives while participating in democratic structures and processes.

Said Minister Gigaba: "As we commemorate the brave actions of the young people who in 1976 stood before a brutal apartheid regime to fight for our freedom, we do so conscious of the role we have to play in building a better South Africa for the youth of today. To this end, the Smart ID card will open a window of opportunities for these young people to enjoy the fruits of those who, 40 years ago, laid down their lives for the establishment of a democratic dispensation."

Minister Gigaba will be joined by various public personalities at the event.
