Minister Mildred Oliphant hosts farm workers Imbizo in Tzaneen, 21 Oct

Farm workers who are foreign nationals become the focus of a dialogue between South Africa and Mozambique in Limpopo this Friday

According to the 2011 population census, about 2, 7 million people or 5% of South African population live and work in farms. The majority of these people (about 4,9%) are mainly foreign nationals.

There is a general acknowledgement by the Department of Labour inspectorate division that these foreign nationals are subjected to the worst forms of work practices with virtually poor living conditions, earnings that are far below sectoral determinations, poor health and safety conditions.

The ministers of labour in South Africa and Mozambique have scheduled an Imbizo type meeting wherein they will be meeting farm workers and the entire farming community in the area of Limpopo. The purpose of this meeting is to ensure that both employers and farm workers understand and comply with the laws applicable in the farming sector.

In this regard, the Ministers will be joined by various government departments that will dialogue with the farming community on how to observe and comply with a multiplicity of  laws. These departments are as follows: Departments of: Home Affairs, Health, Land Affairs, Agriculture and Social Development.

The media is welcomed to attend this Imbizo and a media conference addressed by both minsters will be held at the end of the Imbizo.

The Imbizo will be held as follows:
Date: Friday, 21 October 2016
Time: 10h00
Venue: Karibu Lodge, Tzaneen
