Mogale City meeting yields results-unlawful outcomes set aside

On Thursday 26 January 2017, the Gauteng MEC Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Leadership, Mr Paul Mashatile, accompanied by the Head of the department, Mr Nkontwana and a departmental delegation, met all parties represented in Mogale City Council, including the Mayor, the Speaker, the Chief Whip, and Mayoral committee members to discuss the recent developments which led to the unlawful replacement of the Speaker and the Chief Whip.

All parties were given the opportunity to present their case as a way of establishing the merits of the developments. The meeting agreed that the Structures Act and council rules will dictate how the council runs its business.

In this regard, the outcomes of the unlawful meeting held on the 13th of January 2017 were set aside. The meeting also agreed to use proper and lawful channels to appoint a person in the vacant position of the Municipal Manager. The meeting agreed that the position should be filled urgently.

In addition, the meeting also agreed to utilize a multi-party Rules Committee that will review the rules and orders and present to council their report to the full sitting in the council.
