Public Protector Thuli Madonsela commemorates Mandela Day at uThando Afrika Tikkun centre in Johannesburg, 18 Jul

Public Protector Adv. Thuli Madonsela will on Monday, 18 July 2016, lead her team’s commemoration of Mandela Day by giving their time for humanity at the uThando Afrika Tikkun centre in Johannesburg.

The centre is a national Non-Government Organisation (NGO) that focuses on development programmes to assist children from disadvantaged background. Their focus is on a "cradle to career" approach, supporting children from infancy until they are able to work and fend for themselves.

Afrika Tikkun is also the creator of the Smile foundation – a foundation they co-founded with former President Nelson Mandela and provides plastic and reconstructive surgery for children living with facial anomalies.

The initiative is part of the Public Protector team’s contribution towards bettering the lives of children housed at the centre and building a society where everyone’s full potential is freed and their quality of life improved as promised by the Constitution.

Adv. Madonsela described her team’s planned visit to the centre as their way of expressing gratitude to President Mandela while also throwing their log into the constitutional democracy fire as a way of ensuring that this fire that everyone, including the disadvantaged, should get warmth from, does not die.

Activities at the centre will include creating an insulation wall, planting seeds and plucking weeds in the centre’s vegetable garden, and preparing lunch for the children.

The event will take place as follows:
Date: Monday, 18 July 2016
Time: 10h00
Venue: Uthando Afrika Tikkun, Braamfontein, Johannesburg
