Parliament agrees on Public Protector nominee, Adv Busisiwe Mkhwebane

Public Protector nominee announced

The Ad Hoc Committee to nominate a person for appointment as Public Protector has today agreed on the name of Adv Busisiwe Mkhwebane as a person it will nominate for recommendation to the National Assembly when it tables its report on 31 August 2016.

Committee Chairperson, Dr Makhozi Khoza, said the fact that this candidate’s performance during interviews and her suitability as a “fit and proper person” for this position were not questionable is testament that she is the right person to be nominated by this Committee.

“All members that spoke on Adv Mkhwebane’s candidature agreed that her interview was superb, a marvellous communicator and her experience as former investigator in the Office of the Public Protector worked in her favour. Members considered these attributes, over and above her having met all other requirements dictated to by the legislation,” said Dr Khoza.

All Committee members, except those representing the Democratic Alliance, agreed that the name of Adv Mkhwebane should be tabled before the National Assembly.

“I am very pleased that we concluded this process in a very civil manner. All political parties represented at this Committee conducted themselves in a manner indicative of our maturing democracy. Members were able to put aside their political differences for the better good of the country,” said Dr Khoza.

The name of Adv Mkhwebane will require 60% support from the Members of the National Assembly before it can be sent to President Jacob Zuma for appointment.

The report of the Committee to the National Assembly is expected to be tabled on 31 August 2016. The Committee will thus use the next couple of days to prepare its report for the National Assembly.
