The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has designated the next two days 05 – 06 March 2016 as voter registration weekend for the upcoming 2016 Municipal elections. I wish to call upon all eligible citizens to go out in their numbers to their voting districts and stations to register or to update their information, so that they are ready for this important democratic process.
Over twenty-two thousand registration stations, which is one thousand seven hundred more than the last Municipal Elections in 2011, will be opened during that time for this purpose. Those who need to register as first time voters, those who need to re-register because they have changed voting stations as a result of moving place, or who have been affected by changes in ward or voting districts, as well as every eligible voter should present themselves on the said dates to update their records with the IEC.
The stations will be open from 8a.m to 5p.m on the said dates to allow everybody an opportunity to register. You are also reminded to bring your valid South African identity document, either a green bar-coded ID book, a smartcard ID or a valid Temporary Identity Certificate. To assist this registration process, the offices of the Department of Home Affairs will be open over the weekend between 8am and 5pm to coincide with the registration hours, to enable people to collect their IDs, and to allow those who may have lost their IDs to apply for a temporary ID certificates in order to register.
I urge all South Africans to go and register, or to verify their status so as to fulfil this important duty as citizens of a democratic country. We also encourage young people who are turning 18 years old this year and others to go out in great numbers to register to vote so that that they can have their say in who governs our municipalities. Let us all go out in numbers to our voting stations this weekend.
