President Jacob Zuma addresses 60th Anniversary of the National Women’s Day, 9 Aug

President Jacob Zuma will on Tuesday, 9 August 2016, deliver the national message at the 60th Anniversary of the National Women’s Day celebrations to be held at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.

Held under the theme “Women United in Moving South Africa Forward”, this year’s event will mark 60 years since the iconic 1956 women’s march to the Union Buildings against the discriminatory pass laws, which had restricted the movement of black people in the country.

The Women’s Month of August is this year dedicated to creating a more conducive environment to foster equal and full participation of women in the mainstream economy.

President Zuma will, prior to addressing the nation, unveil the Women’s Living Heritage Monument depicting leaders of the 1956 women’s march at the Lillian Ngoyi Square in the Pretoria Central Business District.

The women’s monument as well as a heritage site will honour the women for their contribution and the role they played in the struggle for freedom, democracy and development of South Africa.

It will include a multi-purpose centre that will provide space for formal and informal training for women; market access for local crafts; provide information to the youth about the women's struggle for emancipation and also serve as a leadership training centre where women will be taught about political and developmental issues.

In reliving the spirit of the women of 1956, women from all walks of life will also embark on a symbolic celebration walk, run and cycle from Lillian Ngoyi Square to the Union Buildings in Pretoria.

Details of the celebrations are as follows:
Date: Tuesday, 9 August 2016
Time: 9h00
Venue: Union Buildings, Pretoria
