Parliament visits Paarl Police stations, 18 Apr

The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Police, Mr Francois Beukman, will this Monday (18 April 2016) visit the police stations in Paarl East at 10h00 and Mbekweni at 13h00 (Western Cape).

The Chairperson’s visit is in response to concerns community leaders and councillors in the area raised regarding gang activity amongst young children and high school learners in the area.

Mr Beukman says the abuse of drugs in our communities is a societal problem and as such will also meet with community leaders and councillors during the visit to develop a sustainable plan of dealing with the drug problem.

“The aim of the visit is to ascertain the implementation of the strategy of South African Police Service to deal with localised crime and the involvement of the community in fighting crime,” said Mr Beukman.

Beukman said the implementation of the back to basics strategy by SAPS and the detective turn-around strategy is vital to promote safer communities.

"The reality is that communities and civil society must take the hands of law enforcement in curbing antisocial behaviour and criminal conduct. It is not the duty of the police alone- parents, families, schools and churches must also play their respective roles, because the development of the conduct of the citizenry is not the sole domain of government.”
