Parliament receives progress report on Distressed Mining Towns Revitalisation Programme, 8 Mar

Human Settlements Committee receives progress report on Distressed Mining Towns Revitalisation Programme

The Portfolio Committee on Human Settlements will tomorrow (8 March), receive a progress report on the implementation of the distressed mining towns revitalisation programme.

Subsequent to the tragic events in Marikana in 2012, President Jacob Zuma established an Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) for the Revitalisation of Distressed Mining Communities to give effect to the Special Presidential Package for the revitalisation of mining districts and their labour sending areas.

The Committee is aware that a lot of work has been done since the announcement and as such deemed it necessary to obtain a progress report from the Department of Human Settlements, which is one of the departments charged with this responsibility. The Committee will also use the opportunity to see how it could assist in unblocking any challenges that might be prohibiting the full implementation of the programme.

The Committee will also receive responses on Human Settlements issues raised during this year’s State of the Nation Address. It will also be briefed on the reviewed strategy on the Community Residential Unit programme.

Details of the meeting are as follows:
Venue: Good Hope Chamber, Ground Floor, Good Hope Building
Time: 9h30
Date: Tuesday, 8 March 2016
