Over 2 000 people waiting for kidney transplant in Gauteng

The Gauteng Health MEC, Ms Qedani Mahlangu, wishes to inform that about 2000 patients are awaiting kidney transplant at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital.

The MEC said the average waiting time for transplant depends on the availability of matching donors. She added that the waiting list was compounded by shortage of donors in all categories of transplant in the province.

MEC Mahlangu further informed that another 286 patients from both in and around Gauteng were on the waiting list for various transplants as follows:

Steve Biko Academic Hospital:

  • Renal Transplant - 96
  • Cornea Transplant - 17

Kempton Park Hospital

It also important to note that, Kempton Park’s Kyalami Hospital will be demolished and a new one will be built in its place. MEC Mahlangu said the Gauteng Provincial Government decided to build new facility as renovations would have been far more costly than building a new hospital.

Finally, Tembisa Hospital will be allocated about R20 million for refurbishments in the financial 2016/17.
