Correctional Services hosts National Offender Athletics Championship finals, 1 to 2 Mar

Offenders to showcase talent during the National Offender Athletics Championship

The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) will host the National Offender Athletics Championship finals on 1st – 2nd March 2016, at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Stadium in Port Elizabeth, in the Eastern Cape. The event will bring together more than 500 male and female offenders from around the country to represent their regions in athletics. The two day event will include various athletic codes such as short and long distance track, javelin, short put, etc.

DCS has identified sports involvement by offenders as an effective tool towards their rehabilitation. Through sports offenders are able to discover their own potential and talents that can be utilised beyond incarceration for economical inclusion and self-sustenance.  It is the strategic objective of DCS to promote and initiate programmes and services on rehabilitation, corrections and reintegration of offenders.
