Parliament hosts North West public hearing, 1 to 2 Mar

North West public hearing: High level panel on assessment of key legislation and acceleration of fundamental change

How have the laws of our democracy affected your life?

Date: 1 and 2 March 2017
Time: 9h00 to 17h00 both days
Place: Rustenburg Civic Centre located at 1 Kloof Road, Extension 1, Cashan, in Rustenburg

The panel, which former President Kgalema Motlanthe chairs, calls on the public to come to the hearing to talk about their experience of the laws of our democracy. Have they made life better? Have there been problems with applying them? What gaps should be filled?

The Speakers’ Forum, a structure of the South African Parliament and the Provincial Legislatures, appointed the panel to assess the effectiveness of key legislation passed since 1994. It will do this through public consultations across the country and other research processes. The panel will also assess implementation of our laws, identify gaps and propose necessary interventions and recommendations. It is scheduled to submit its final report in August 2017, when the report will be launched at a media briefing.

The panel’s focus areas are:

  • Poverty, unemployment, inequality and equitable distribution of wealth
  • Land reform and rural development
  • Social cohesion and nation building

The North West hearing next week will be the eighth of the panel’s provincial public hearings being held in each of the nine provinces. Hearings have already been held in the Eastern Cape, Northern Cape, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, Western Cape and Mpumalanga.

Media wishing to attend the North West hearings should send their details to the following official:
