Commission for Gender Equality on redressing judicial gender injustice

Nominations of the for women Justices a huge step in redressing judicial gender injustice

The nominations of Justices Zukisa Tshiqi, Leona Theron, Dhaya Pillay and Nonkosi Mhlantla to be interviewed on the 9 and 10 July 2015 for the recently vacated position by Judge Thembile Skweyiya at the Constitutional Court is a huge step in ensuring that gender imbalances within the judiciary is addressed.  The Commission applauds the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) for such a bold undertaking to shortlist four women justices. The Commission has written a letter of support to the four women nominated for the Constitutional Court position. We believe with their education and experience as Jurists and whoever gets to be recommended for the post will do well to advance the course of gender equality.

The Commission believes that although this move is what we stand in terms of our mandate, it is therefore our firm belief that more needs to be done in order to ensure that there is acceleration in terms of gender balance within the judicial system. “50% representation of women in all structures is our primary objective therefore the Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) encourages all Institutions to adhere to principles of Southern African Development Community (SADC) Protocol on Gender and Development which calls for 50-50 in all the structures”, said Mr. Mfanozelwe Shozi, the Chairperson of the Commission for Gender Equality.

The Commission wishes all the candidates well in their interviews.
