Deputy Minister Jeremy Cronin on newly refurbished Mdantsane Magistrates Court

Newly refurbished Mdantsane Magistrates Court to contribute to efficient delivery of the criminal justice services: Deputy Minister Cronin

The newly refurbished Mdantsane Magistrates Court will contribute to the improved delivery of legal and justice services to the people of East London, Deputy Minister of Public Works Mr Jeremy Cronin said.

Speaking at the handing-over of the court to the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development earlier today (12 July 2016) in Mdantsane in the Eastern Cape, Minister Cronin said the refurbished building will allow the community easy access to justice administrative programmes and services.

Deputy Minister Cronin also added that the refurbishment would make the court easily accessible to people with physical disabilities.

The refurbishment project at the court is part of the National Department of Public Works’ Planned Maintenance Programme. The project created 80 Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) work opportunities. A total of 19 of the overall work opportunities created in the project were created through the National Youth Service (NYS). The NYS is a sub-programme of the EPWP.

Deputy Minister Cronin commended the project’s capacity to create work and training opportunities for the local community.

“The government will continue to work with all sectors of society to create work and training opportunities for our people. The work and training opportunities created through the project for part of the government’s 2019 target of creating over 6 million work opportunities,” he said.

The scope of work done during refurbishment project:

  • General building work, i.e. painting, flooring, plumbing and total replacement of the aluminium window shopfronts.
  • Replacement and servicing the roof infrastructure.
  • Civil Infrastructure i.e. stormwater, water and sewer line replacement. The parking areas were slurry sealed to give them a facelift.
  • Structural elements on the retaining walls and general cracks around the building were resolved.
  • The Electrical installation was serviced and energy saving light fittings with movement sensors in the offices were introduced.
  • All Health and Safety related issues also been resolved.

The EPWP is a government programme that’s aimed at alleviating poverty through the creation of work and training opportunities. The EPWP Phase 3 was launched by State President Jacob Zuma on 01 October 2014 in Keiskammahoek in the Eastern Cape.

When President Zuma launched the EPWP Phase 3 in Kieskammahoek in the Eastern Cape, he pledged that the Programme would contribute to community development and social cohesion.
