National Science Week (NSW) is an annual countrywide celebration of science, technology, engineering, mathematics and innovation (STEMI) led by the Department of Science and Technology.  Various stakeholders, role players and interest groups conduct activities that promote awareness of the value of STEMI to people's daily lives.

The 2015 theme for the National Science Week, aligned with the United Nations (UN) theme, is "Light and Light based-technologies (IYL 2015)".

National Science Week will be held from 1 to 8 August, with the Minister of Science and Technology launching the focus week on 1 August 2015 at the Mafikeng Campus of North-West University (NWU). NWU hasthree campuses and a footprint in two provinces. The Mafikeng and Potchefstroom Campuses are situated in the North West and the Vaal Triangle Campus is in Gauteng.

Invitations to the national launch have been extended to the Premier of the North-West, the MEC for Education in the province, and the Executive Mayor of Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality.

As part of the NSW launch, the Minister will launch the Mzansi4Science portal, which is another platform identified to profile the work of the National System of Innovation in addition to social media, television and radio.  The portal will go live on 1 August 2015 to coincide with NSW activities.
