Gauteng Sports and Recreation hosts Provincial Indigenous Games, 6 Aug

Gauteng to choose strong team for National Indigenous Games

The Gauteng Provincial Indigenous Games to select the winning team for the national games in September will be held this coming weekend at Eesterus Stadium in Tshwane.

Sanctioned by the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation the games will feature over 600 participants across the province who will be competing for a place in the team on codes including kgati (skipping), dibeke, morabaraba, drie-stokkies, juskei, intonga (stick fighting), diketo and khokho.

“This time around we are looking at bringing the national title to Gauteng, something that has eluded us for a while. Being the melting pot of various South African indigenous cultures and traditions we are confident as Gauteng that we can come up with the best team to bring the glory back home”, says Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Faith Mazibuko.

The indigenous games programme is aimed at cultivating and promoting cultural and recreational activities that have for decades been part of the growing up of a lot of people particularly within communities which had limited facilities. Their revival is hoped at impacting positively on South Africa’s social issues including the restoration of African pride and identity.
