MEC Helen Sauls-August introduces contractors to work in Oceanview and Kruisfontein, 29 Apr

Multi million rand Infrastructure investment unlocks Kouga housing projects

In efforts to unblock human settlements delivery to Kouga residents, the department has spent R 97,27 million to upgrade the bulk infrastructure  in Humansdorp and Jeffrey’s bay housing projects under Kouga Local Municipality paving the way for the construction of long awaited housing units to start in May this year.

There are currently 10 projects were identified by the municipality as per the IDP and approved by the dept. for pre-planning activities. All ten projects could not commence due to the lack of bulk infrastructure. The department intervened and allocated R 113,65 million to unlock infrastructure challenges on five projects and future developments in the following areas (Hankey, Patensie, and Jeffrey’s Bay). R97.2 million has already been spent on upgrading the collapsing infrastructure in the area.

Kouga Municipality, which falls under the Sarah Baartman District, has battled with a historical and critical infrastructure challenge due to poor spatial planning, rooted in the apartheid era. This challenge has limited future development where planned and budgeted integrated human settlements projects were stalled for the past ten years.

To mark this breakthrough, Human Settlements MEC, Helen Sauls-August will be introducing the appointed contractor(s) to commence work in Oceanview and Kruisfontein. The work is part of the policy and budget vote 2016/17 pronouncements made by the MEC Helen Sauls-August.
