Mineral Resources Minister, Mr Mosebenzi Zwane (MP) will on Thursday, 28 January 2016, release statistics on the health and safety performance of the mining industry for the 2015 calendar year.
Issues of health and safety in the sector are governed in terms of the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA), to provide for protection of the health and safety of employees and other persons at mines.
The Act aims to, inter alia, provide for the enforcement of health and safety measures and to regulate employers’ and employees’ duties to identify hazards; and eliminate, control and minimise the risk to health and safety. The statistics look at performance per commodity, in terms of fatalities, injuries and occupational diseases.
