Minister Van Rooyen to engage with TVET apprentices and hand over tools of trade
The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), honourable Des Van Rooyen will hand over protective clothing and tools of trade to sixty-one (61) apprentices of Matlosane TVET College in Klerksdorp, Bokone Bophirima Province. Among the apprentices are fifty-nine (59) electricians, and two fitter and turner learners.

This event that will take place in Matlosane TVET College, Klerksdorp on 27 June 2017, is part of the broader government youth month programme. The event follows the assistance by the Municipal Infrastructure Support Agent (MISA) which was established by the Department in May 2012 as a special purpose vehicle aimed at providing support and strengthening municipalities in their technical capabilities in terms of infrastructure planning, delivery, operations and maintenance.
MISA through its capacity building efforts focuses on the interests of the youth through its Technical Bursary Scheme which provides financial support to needy students at tertiary institutions who are studying towards technical professions including Civil and Electrical Engineering, Project and Construction Management as well as Town and Regional Planning. The MISA Young Graduate Programme, provides qualified candidates in the aforesaid fields with workplace exposure which enables them to acquire requisite experience and assist them in completing their studies and ready them to enter the job market. They also receive coaching and mentoring towards registration as professionals in their respective occupational fields.
On the other hand, the Apprenticeship Programme provides learners with theoretical training, hands-on experience, and trade testing towards them qualifying as Artisans. Once an Apprentice is certified as competent to perform a listed trade, in accordance with the provisions of the Skills Development Act, such a learner becomes an Artisan. So the Apprenticeship Programme is an Artisan Development Programme, also championed by MISA.
Having said the above, it is clear that radical economic transformation is a reality in local government and calls for recognition and further support for the requisite skills that will change the face of local government for the better. It’s cool to be a 21st Century Artisan.
