The Honourable Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Mr Senzeni Zokwana, is attending the G20 Agriculture Ministers’ Meeting in Xi’an, China.
The meeting is a gathering of all G20 Agriculture Ministers, guest countries as well as international organisations to share policy experiences and discuss innovative ways of advancing agricultural development and food production in a changing global environment.
One of the goals outlined by the G20 Summit of 2016 was to improve food security and nutrition. According to the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations, world’s food production needs to be increased by 60 million from 2005-2050 to meet the global food demand
The G20 should reaffirmed the commitment to implement previous commitments of food security and nutrition, promote innovation of agricultural science and technology, increase agricultural investment and lift food production capacity. The G20 Ministers were emphatic on and warmed up to the promotion of Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development (SDGs), technology and innovation, including ICT. These priorities are at the pinnacle of the G20 member state while also implementing previous commitments in tandem with current ones.
The G20 goals are in line with what South African government strives to achieve and with regards to Poverty reduction and food security remain on top of the list for government. International Cooperation and Investment is needed to work together with developing countries especially the least developed ones to build their capacity and improve their developmental environment.
