Minister Rob Davies briefs media on Promotion and Protection of Investment Bill, 17 Nov

Members of the media are invited to attend a briefing on the Promotion and Protection of Investments Bill, where the Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Rob Davies will give an update on the Bill.

The primary objectives of the Bill are to clarify the level of protection that an investor may expect in the Republic of South Africa and to further ensure that South Africa remains open to foreign investment.

The briefing will be held as follows:
Date: Tuesday, 17 November 2015
Time: 12h30
Venue: Imbizo Media Centre, Parliament, Cape Town

There will be a video link to GCIS, Tshedimosetso House, 1035 Frances Baard Street (corner Festival Street), Hatfield, Pretoria.

The Bill follows a comprehensive review of the Bilateral Investment Treaties and the risk associated with these Treaties. The Bill affirms the country’s sovereign right to regulate in the public interest and pursue its broad transformational agenda. In addition, it clarifies the BIT type provision in a manner that is consistent with the South Africa Constitution. The Bill has been introduced at the opportune time given that such introduction of legislation is in keeping with global trends.

Earlier this month, the Portfolio Committee on Trade and Industry passed the bill, and Minister Davies will tomorrow table it in Parliament for adoption before addressing the media.

RSVPs should be directed to Tshilidzi Madinani via email: TMadinani@thedti.gov.za  or telephone on 079 879 5524.
