Minister Naledi Pandor hands over mobile computers to schools in uMkhanyakude District, 16 Jan

Thousands of learners attending schools in the impoverished uMkhanyakude District Municipality in northern KwaZulu-Natal will benefit from a Department of Science and Technology-led initiative to support the learning of Mathematics and Science in rural schools.

The Minister of Science and Technology, Naledi Pandor, will on 16 January 2016 officially hand over mobile computers laboratories to support 29 rural schools in the uMkhanyakude District as part of a computer-based learning pilot project.

She will be accompanied by the KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Senzo Mchunu, the uMkhanyakude District Mayor, Jeffrey Vilane, and Mtubatuba Local Municipality Mayor, Israel Nyawo.

The aim of the project is to improve the learners' and teachers' knowledge of and interest in maths and science, which will result  in improved performance in the Grade 12 examinations.

Immediately after the handing-over ceremony, Minister Pandor and the VIPs accompanying her will interact with the community of uMkhanyakude District to raise awareness about science and technology on society, as well as any other matters related to government services.

On the sidelines of the imbizo, a science and technology exhibition will give learners and members of the community an opportunity to interact with exhibits.  Other government entities expected to render services during this event include the South Africa Social Security Agency and the Department of Home Affairs.
