Nhleko appeals for construction industry partnership to root out corruption

Public Works Minister, Nathi Nhleko has appealed for the partnership of the construction industry professionals to root out corruption which he said results in the decay of ethical values as well as public morality. Minister Nhleko made the plea on the first day of the two-day 6th Construction Management Summit that ended on Tuesday in Durban.

“Corruption causes civil strife, discourages the much-needed foreign investment and threatens the rule of law by eroding public confidence,” emphasized Nhleko in his address to the summit hosted by the South African Council for the Project and Construction Management Professions (SACPCMP).

He emphasised that while it is government’s responsibility to fight corruption, society as well as the construction industry also has a significant role to play.

“Corruption as we all know re-directs the scarce resources into the pockets of a few dishonest individuals. This is a challenge that all of us must embrace and therefore need to commit yourselves in a positive manner to fostering of honest workplace environment, to combat wastage and illegal activities,” he stressed.

Nhleko added that it is incumbent upon construction industry players to devise appropriate management systems at their various work places to guard against embezzlement, fraud and corrupt practices.
