The Department of Basic Education will on Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 August 2015 continue its drive to eradicate adult illiteracy and promote reading across the country as Minister Motshekga continues the Kha Ri Gude Roadshow in Morake Village, Limpopo and Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal.
The Kha Ri Gude Mass Literacy Campaign was launched in February 2008, with the intention of enabling 4,7 million adults above the age of 15 years to become literate and numerate in one of the eleven official languages. The campaign is geared to achieve a level of basic literacy equivalent to three years of schooling, and thereby enable South Africa to reduce illiteracy by 50% in accordance with the Millennium Development Goals.
The programme has made a meaningful difference and has to date impacted the lives of more than 3.5 million of our people across the country, enabling them to read and write for the first time in their lives.
