Minister Lynne Brown appoints Siyabonga Gama as Transnet Group Chief Executive Officer

Cabinet today noted the appointment of Mr Siyabonga Gama as the new Group Chief Executive Officer of Transnet.

Mr Gama has been acting in the position since April 2015. He succeeds Mr Brian Molefe, who was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Eskom in October last year.

“Mr Gama spent the past 14 years in various executive positions at Transnet and his extensive experience in transport logistics and infrastructure as well as his commitment to transformation has been key considerations in confirming the appointment.

“Transnet is one of the success stories in our portfolio of State-Owned Companies where the fruits of succession planning are evident. This can also be seen in the appointment of Mr Gary Pita as the Transnet’s Chief Financial Officer in March this year.

“Transnet continues to maintain a good track record of being a sustainable State-Owned Company and the appointment further assists stabilising the executive leadership of the Company.

“I wish Mr Gama well as he leads Transnet into further improvement of operational efficiency and sustainability,” said Minister Lynne Brown.

Mr. Gama’s condensed CV

Gama obtained a Bachelor of Commerce in 1998 at the University of Swaziland; a Diploma in Banking at the Institute of Bankers CAIB (SA) in 1991. Additional training includes an Executive Development Programme at Wharton Business School, University of Pennsylvania (2013).

He has more than 23 years experience in general management at Executive and Board level in the logistics, commercial, banking, marketing and operational environment.

Gama spent 14 of those years at divisions at Transnet in the capacity of Chief Executive Officer with particular focus on innovative optimisation of Supply Chain Logistics ranging from sectors of mining, fuel, manufacturing, cement, containers, chemicals etc.; in-depth know how of commodity markets and vision formulation.
