Minister Mildred Oliphant delivers the 2017/18 budget vote for the Department of Labour
The Minister of Labour Mildred Oliphant and the Deputy Minister Honourable, Nkosi Phathekile Holomisa, the Director General Mr. Thobile Lamati and senior management of the Department of Labour will be presenting to the media; the budget vote of for the year 2017/18 on Wednesday 24 May at 17: 30 in Cape Town.
The highlights of this year’s presentation to the media by the Minister entail discussions about the minimum wages agreement and the necessary legislative instrument giving effect to the agreement. Secondly it is the skills development and enterprise development initiatives by the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) through Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Colleges.
Furthermore the briefing will deal with the investment portfolios of the two funds: The UIF and the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act (COIDA). The UIF has accumulated R 130 billion at the end of February 2017 and the Compensation Fund accumulated R57 billion in the same period.
Finally at the international front China is to pass on the Chair of BRICS to South Africa in September 2016. The Minister of Labour carries the responsibility of convening Ministers of Labour in this block. This and many other issues will be discussed in this media briefing and media will be given an opportunity to ask questions to the Minister the Deputy Minister and senior management at the Department of Labour.
