Minister Jeff Radebe participates at Chief Albert Luthuli Memorial Lecture, 26 Nov

The Minister in the Presidency for Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation and Chairperson of the National Planning Commission, Jeff Radebe will form part of the panel at the Chief Albert Luthuli Memorial Lecture entitled, “Is the South African Constitution an obstacle or a catalyst in fostering Nation Building and Social Cohesion in our historically divided society?”

Minister Jeff Radebe will be joined by the newly appointed Public Protector - Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane, and Dr Wally Serote, one of the Living Legends Legacy advocate for heritage who will address this question at this year’s Chief Albert Luthuli Memorial Lecture.

The theme of this year’s lecture is expected to afford an opportunity to reflect on the effectiveness of the much lauded South African Constitution in addressing present day challenges in the country within the context of social cohesion and nation building. The topic also coincides with the 20 years of the Constitution commemorations taking place across the country.

The topic will also provide an opportunity for the panel and audience to examine how far South Africans as a society have come in realising the vision Chief Albert Luthuli espoused and aspired to in 1958, ‘a South Africa, with all our diversities of colour and race; (that) will show the world a new pattern of democracy…And so develop a true South African culture, built up of the best of all our cultures’.

The programme format will include remarks by the Vice Chancellor; Chairperson of the Luthuli Museum; the Chief Albert Luthuli Foundation and the National Department of Arts and Culture. The audience will also have an opportunity to engage with the speakers in a facilitated panel discussion.

The event will take place as follows:
