Minister Dlamini to commemorate Nelson Mandela Day in Kliptown, Soweto – Gauteng Province

The Minister of Social Development, Ms Bathabile Dlamini, will on Tuesday, July 18, commemorate Nelson Mandela Day in Kliptown, Soweto, under the theme, “Action Against Poverty.”

Nelson Mandela International Day is commemorated annually in remembrance of South Africa's first black President, the late Nelson Mandela. The day seeks to celebrate the former President’s birthday and the legacy he left for all South Africans and the world.

The day was set aside by the United Nations (UN) in honour of the former President and is officially commemorated on 18 July, which is President Mandela's birthday. The UN declared in November 2009 that this day should be commemorated by citizens of the world through voluntary work and service and the first UN Mandela Day was held on 18 July 2010.

As part of making a difference in the lives of poor South Africans, women and girls from poor families of Soweto will on the day receive sanitary towels from the Department of Social Development.
