Minister of Transport Ms. Dipuo Peters will close the 2016 October Transport Month (OTM) campaign by officially opening the Libode Interchange Bridge along the R61 on Sunday, 30 October 2016 in Libode, Eastern Cape.
The bridge is part of the construction project by the Department’s road entity, the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) to upgrade the R61.
The opening of the bridge will be preceded by a media breakfast on Saturday, 29 October 2016 where the Eastern Cape MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Ms Wesiwe Tikana will announce the recently appointed operator and managing company for Mthatha Airport which is one of the Department of Transport’s agencies, Airports Company South Africa (ACSA). Transport Minister will officiate at the ceremony.
Later in the evening the Annual National Transport Awards will take place where Minister Peters will present Awards to winners in the various categories under the theme: “Inspiring Excellence and Innovation for a Sustainable Transport Sector”.
The objective of the Awards is to:
- Promote a new culture of professionalism, dedication, integrity and service delivery by encouraging collaboration amongst transport officials at national, provincial and municipal level as well as public entities
- To celebrate the success of individuals, teams and institutions in search for more effective and accountable transport sector
- To encourage active participation of individuals, teams and honour dedication, innovation and creativity that is intended to make transport sector successful and
- To recognise the commitment and sacrifice made by the individuals and teams in providing quality and effective delivery to the citizens in the country.
The Minister will be joined by the Deputy Minister of Transport Ms. Sindisiwe Chikunga, the Eastern Cape MEC for Transport and Community Safety Ms Weziwe Tikana, MEC for Roads & Public Works Ms Thandiswa Marawu. Stakeholders from O.R Tambo District Municipality, Nyandeni Local Municipality, King Sabatha Dalindyebo Local Municipality, transport entities, MECs from other provinces and members of the community will form part these events.
